CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“I can’t believe you guys made up,” Quill stabs his pancake, a sullen look on his face. He then points the pancake at me, and I watch the maple syrup drip all over the table, as he continues in an aggrieved tone. “That boy is trouble. And he’s weird. Like, what is a Level Three student doing with a Level One student. What’s he up to? You know the answer to that question? No good! That’s what!”

I use my knife to lower his fork down, my tone dry, “Because you’re so normal.”

“I am normal,” Quill thumps his chest. “And I am quite a ladies’ man. Tell her, Beth.”

“He likes the ladies but they don’t like him,” Beth looks at me, somberly. “He tried hitting on Kathleen yesterday and she rejected him.”

Quill narrows his eyes at her, “I didn’t hit on her. I asked her if she wanted to go on a walk.”

“She thought he was hitting on her,” Beth chews on her omelet. “But Susan likes you. She thinks you’re cute.”

“She’s a baby!”

“She’s fourteen!”

“And I’m seventeen!”

“You’ll be seventeen next month,” Beth shakes her head at him.

“Anyway,” I shake my head at him as the two glare at each other. “Back to me. Rachel saw us and she looked mad. Like she wanted to rip off my head mad.”

Beth suddenly looks worried, “What are you going to do?”

“Nothing,” I shrug. “I can’t do anything till I know what she’s plotting. And I know something is cooking in that brain of hers.”

Beth’s fork clatters on her plate, “I don’t like this, Taylor. What if she tries to hurt you again? I don’t think this is a good idea. She’s literally out for your blood.”

“Well, I do know that she won’t be able to use Veronica now,” I munch on the sausage sticking on my fork, pleased. “I freaked her out a little too much last night.”

“How about we spend this weekend not worrying about Veronica or Rachel, and we just relax. It’s actually sunny and the counselors gave us permission to go to the lake if we go in a group.”

“Really?” Even I perk up at that.

However, Quill gives me a small smile, “Um, did I mention that some of the counselors have to come along for supervision?”

“So-?”

The question is barely out of my mouth when I realize who he’s talking about.

“Rachel is going, isn’t she?”

“Yeah,” Quill admits. “I just remembered. She invited some of the Level Threes that she’s friends with. I heard the Director only gave permission because she asked.”

“That’s not favoritism,” Susan’s voice pipes up from next to me as she sits down.

Kathleen is not far behind.

It’s odd to have the two of them with us during mealtimes but I’m getting used to it.

“I wouldn’t go if I were you,” Kathleen gives me a strange look. “But I would also advise you against being alone. It’ll put you in a vulnerable position.”

“I agree. Besides, I’m not a fan of water,” Susan declares. “My sister used to try and drown me as a joke when we were kids.
